What does the day of testing actually look like?
Therapy sessions last for 50 minutes. I typically start off by meeting with people on a weekly basis, but after meeting we can decide a frequency schedule that works for you. There is no set number of sessions or length you will be in therapy. I check in frequently to determine whether therapy is helpful towards meeting goals and provide feedback to determine when is an appropriate “ending” time. Some people find that they get what they need from a few sessions, whereas others choose to remain in therapy for a longer period of time.
The first session is an “intake” session, where I will ask more questions in order to gather information to best be able to help you. After the first session, there is not usually a schedule or format for therapy. Instead, I like to tailor sessions individually and work with you to best meet your needs depending on what is going on.
A day of testing typically lasts anywhere from 3-6 hours depending on the needs and age of the individual. In younger children, this is typically broken up into 2 separate testing days, whereas with adolescents and adults this is typically done in one day . During the testing portions, you or your child will be asked to complete several tasks. Depending on the referral question, you will fill out several forms, participate in various activities designed to measure different aspects of executive, social-emotional, and academic functioning such as puzzles, computer activities, and/or engage in school-related tasks (such as writing, spelling, and math).
